Holiday Ho-Daddy a success

We want to thank everyonew who made it out to the 3rd Annual Holiday Ho-Daddy! It was a huge success and we raised 500 dollars for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank (thanks to a huge donation from Pat Byrne!) The foodbank can convert every dollar to 8 dollars of food, so we are thrilled! The show was our longest to date, as we had two new tunes we unvieled for everyone… They were Pangaea (the break-up mix) and The Final Piltdown. We are feeling more comfortable amongst homosapiens, making our playlist expand as we remember our old tribal songs and feel inspired to write new ones as well. Drumbuie was on point and even made his first vocalizations on stage in years (first time since the PlioceneEra really!) It was a night to behold. We are looking forward to our next performance and we will keep you updated on when that is!

There’s no place like Byrne’s for the Holidays!

December 9th, 2011 No comments

Once again we find ourselves throwing on the animal skins, waxing up the boards and ripping up the Paleolithic surf on the Glacial Moraine – That’s right, it’s time for the Third Annual Holiday Ho-Daddy Benefit Concert!!

This year we’re back at the ever-accommodating Byrne’s Pub in Grandview, playing every song we know – and probably a few we don’t! – to raise money for one of our favorite causes, the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.

When: Thursday, December 22nd at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Byrne’s Pub – 1248 West 3rd Ave. – Columbus 43212
Cover: $5.00 donation to the FoodBank

The Mid-Ohio Foodbank has been on the front lines of hunger for more than thirty years, and through its network of partner organizations provide more than 50,000 meals every day to hungry Ohio families. What’s even more amazing is that the Foodbank turns every dollar donated into eight dollars worth of groceries, making them not only one of the most helpful organizations on the block, but also masters of altruistic alchemy!

Cover for entry will be $5.00 at the door, and as always every dollar of that goes directly to the Foodbank. We’ll also be accepting additional donations above the door donation all night, so any time the mood strikes you can toss a couple extra bucks into the copper cauldron on the Byrne’s stage and know that you’re making a big difference to Ohio families in need.

Keep checking back for the official poster and set list for this year’s show, and we hope to see you all at Byrne’s on the 22nd!

CVG wrap-up and Autralosurfecus’ productive autumn…

Hello humans! We want to thank CVG and everyone who came to the auto show. It was a great time and we raised some money for wonderful causes. Check this out for a glimpse of the event! (Thanks to CVG for putting this together) It was much warmer than we thought and it was a perfect day. We had an electircal malfunction in the middle of the first tune, but this doesn’t stop us. Remember when we were first around there was no electricity.

Since the show we have been hibernating in the Surf Cave! We have written two new tunes that we are looking forward to playing for everyone. We have unearthed the fossilized ‘red drum set’ and after careful cataloging and precision cleaning it is now in the cave for Drumbuie to wail on. A tear was seen in Drumbuie’s eye as he was reconnected with another artifact from our original time period! We have the Holiday Ho-Daddy coming up and a C.F. Foundation walk booked for spring, so keep checking for updates on these. We’ll see you soon.

Live at the CVG auto show!!

Hello fellow simians… the wait has paid off. I know you have been wondering, ‘Was there another mass extinction?’. Have no fear, we have not rejoined the carbon dating scene. We Surfecines are a hardy species, hell we have survived an ice age and more!! In fact we have a show coming up in October. It is an auto show that is a benefit for the C.F. Foundation and the Flying Horse Farms. These are two great organizations and we are excited to be a part of the festivities.

Man or Astroman? is making a return to Ohio. They will be playing the mid point music festival  September 24th. You have to see them!!

Ho-Daddy wrap-up and beyond… A productive spring!

Hello fellow simians,
First, we want to thank all of you who came out to the 2nd annual holiday ho-daddy at Byrne’s Pub. The reception was great and once again we raised hundreds of dollars for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank at a time when the need is great! For those of you who missed it, we had a full hour and a half of songs and witty banter. The show included an extended drum solo between the Drumbuie and Low Frequency Echo-Communicator that had the audience dancing and pining for the primordial days of yore! Th Six String Sapien gnashed his teeth on several tunes and had solos that left you wondering how Neanderthals and early modern humans lost the gift given to them by Australosurfecus… Only recently has some of that glory been re-discovered, and a good portion of it due to the re-emergence of the Six String Sapien himself!

After the show the members of the band retreated to the cave for much needed rest and to begin the very secretive and primitive ritual of creating new songs for the modern public to consume. Several new tunes are either completed or in the works for the next time the band ventures from the cave. The idea of recording a mini-demo is also in the works, as the old recordings of the group were made with Tertiary Era technology and lack a little gusto. All three of the band members are eager to take advantage of Quaternary methods, which will enhance the primitive sonic experience for everyone. Shows are in the works, new tunes are in the works… the future looks bright for the Surfeci and there seems to be no signs of a second mass extinction!

2nd Annual Holiday Ho-Daddy Announced!!

December 15th, 2010 No comments

It’s that time of year again, when we trek across the frozen plains in search of a warm stage, a good time and a chance to raise some money for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank!

It’s the Second Annual Holiday Ho-Daddy Benefit Concert, and it’s just two short weeks away!

The Mid-Ohio Foodbank has been helping feed hungry Ohioans for 30 years, and through their network of partner organizations help provide more than 50,000 meals every day across Ohio. Those meals make a huge difference in the lives of needy Ohio families, and we consider it a privilege to invite everyone out to help raise money for an organization that’s working to end hunger in our community.

We’re also proud to announce that this year’s show will be held at perennial watering hole Byrne’s Pub in Grandview! Byrne’s have graciously opened their doors to host the show, which means that every last dime will go directly to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank!

When: Thursday, December 30th at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Byrne’s Pub – 1248 West 3rd Ave. – Columbus 43212
Cover: $3.00 donation to the FoodBank

For every dollar the Foodbank receives, they distribute eight dollars worth of groceries. Because of this, we’ll also be accepting additional donations above the door donation, so when the Power of Surf compels you, you’ll be able to donate as much as you want to help the Foodbank end hunger in Ohio.

For our part, we’re working up our biggest set list yet! If we know it, we’re playing it, so we hope you’ll come out to join us on the 30th for an evening of Smithwick’s, Sapiens and Surf!

Frozen Surf

After a few months of limiting ourselves to cave dwelling, the Surfeci are preparing to return to the public eye. Plans in the works for another holiday show, akin to last years…. We will let you know when things are finalized. Seeing how we prescribe to no known modern-sapien religion, we imbibe in the festivities of all of them, giving us plenty to do this winter. However, we have been crafting new tunes to bring to Ohio and it’s frozen shores.

We want to thank those of you who attended the Hot Times Festival. It was during a big football game here in Columbus and we thank those who braved being away from the TV for a few hours. The show went off to perfection and the debut of Sleepover at Camp Tsavo was fantastic…..

We will have show details soon.

Dick Dale – Cancer Warrior? Indeed!

August 4th, 2010 No comments

Rewind to last week.  I was making my evening reading rounds of guitar forums before climbing into my arboreal sleeping arrangements, and came across a thread that stopped me cold.  Over on the SurfGuitar101 forum, someone had posted a health update on Dick Dale, who is obviously pretty revered among us surfing birds.  The update consisted of a friend-to-friend email that painted a pretty dismal picture of The King’s health – that he’d been battling through cancer and was getting back out onto the stage, only to have an undetected infection ripping his newly regained health right out of his body.

Reading, and then re-reading, the post, I was absolutely shaken.  It’s obvious that Dick Dale is upheld among all others in the realm of surf and instro guitar.  Despite the fact that Australosurfecus doesn’t sound much like Dick’s style of surf, I personally count him as one of my primary influences on my six-stringed sojourn.  He also holds a special place in the dark Congolese heart of us as a band – In addition to his monster contribution to the core of the genre we call home, our first official outing as a triumvirate was attending a Dick Dale show here in Columbus, Ohio.  All three of us left slack-jawed, and the night stands as one of the best, if not the best, live performance I’ve ever been privileged to witness.

The man controls thunder.  That’s the simplest way to put it.  That guitar, those Showmen amps, all of it – you don’t so much hear it as you feel it, pushing you around, rearranging your brain from song to song.

Now to the following night, when I sat down and re-traced my steps to find the posting on Dick’s health, check for updates and write an update here on the Surfecus Site… only to find that the thread was nowhere to be found.

That was pretty scary.

In absence of any mention or reason, I assumed the obvious – that Dick or someone close to him had requested the post be pulled – which made me even more concerned for The Eliminator.  Thankfully, it seems someone from the LA Times was likewise concerned, contacted Dick and ran an article on Dick’s battle with cancer, his push to get back on the stage and the current health concerns that have all us surf guitarists muting the strings.

Dick Dale: Surf guitar king riding the wave back from cancer (LA Times)

Long and short of it, Dick is optimistic and fighting as usual to get back to health and playing for his fans.  Allegedly, he’s set to undergo surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center today, so if you have a minute to send some positive energy – or an uplifting email to dick@dickdale.com – it’d be a great time to do so.

And to any guitarists reading this – if you’re playing tonight, rip off a gliss for the Big Kahuna.  He deserves all the reverberated vibes we can send his way…
